Speech-language pathologists (or speech and language therapists, speech therapists, or simply, SLPs) prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, cognitive-communication, social communication, voice, and swallowing disorders. Working with individuals of all ages—from babies to adults—SLPs conduct therapy sessions on a one-on-one basis and provide information for families, support groups, and the general public.

In many cases, SLPs work with other healthcare professionals to provide referrals and assessments. Speech-language pathologists treat a wide range of communication delays and disorders. These include:

  • Speech Disorders – These can occur when an individual has difficulty producing speech sounds and putting them together to form intelligible words. Speech disorders include articulation or phonological disorders, apraxia of speech, and dysarthria.
  • Language – Difficulties in understanding what was heard or read (receptive language) or using words to share thoughts and feelings (expressive language) may point to a language disorder. This can manifest in either spoken or written expression and may involve form (phonology, morphology, and syntax), content (semantics), and use (pragmatics) of language.
  • Voice or Resonance – Voice or resonance disorders refer to problems in how one’s voice sounds. One may sound hoarse, lose voice easily, talk through the nose or too loudly, or be unable to make sounds.
  • Social Communication – This refers to the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication. This includes how one communicates socially, how well one follows conversation rules and story-telling (the aspect of expressive language called narratives), tells jokes, and how one speaks with different people in varied situations.
  • Cognitive-Communication – Someone with a cognitive-communication disorder may exhibit problems with organization, memory, attention, problem-solving, and other thinking skills. This can be a result of traumatic brain injury, a stroke, dementia, and may also be congenital.
  • Swallowing Disorders – Also known as dysphagia, swallowing disorders refer to difficulties in chewing, sucking, and swallowing food and liquid as a result of illness, surgery, stroke, or injury.
  • Literacy – Individuals with speech and language disorders may also experience difficulties with pre-literacy and literacy skills (phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, reading comprehension, and writing).

Aside from the disorders mentioned above, SLPs may also:

  • Provide aural rehabilitation for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Work with individuals with severe expressive or comprehension disorders (such as autism spectrum disorder and progressive neurological disorders) and provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems.
  • Help individuals enhance their communication skills (such as modifying one’s accent) to express themselves more effectively.

Craig Selinger


Craig Selinger is a NY State licensed speech-language therapist (pathologist) and a learning specialist, who works with babies, preschoolers, and elementary and middle school students. He makes house calls in Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Fort Greene, and Brooklyn Heights. Susan received an M.S. degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a B.A. Degree cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Taryn, MA, CCC-SLP/TSSLD is a state-licensed, ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist based out of Astoria, NY. She graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2014 with a master’s degree in Communicative Disorders and Sciences. Her experience is primarily with children from early childhood through adolescence in a variety of settings including schools, clinics, homes, and teletherapy.

Taryn also works in a special education elementary school where she primarily services students on the autism spectrum. Her areas of expertise in this setting include assistive technology, sensory feeding, social communication, articulation, and expressive/receptive language delays.

In March 2021, Taryn completed the Level 1 certification to be an SOS Approach to Feeding Trained Therapist. She uses this comprehensive, multidisciplinary program to assess and address the causes of feeding difficulties.

She believes in taking a multisensory approach to reading intervention. Her practice uses Lively Letters which is a research-based and clinically proven, multi-sensory reading program that targets phonemic awareness, phonics, and speech production.

For articulation therapy, Taryn has been trained to use the SATPAC (Systematic Articulation Training Program Accessing Computers) program. This is a helpful therapy program for children who have difficulty saying /s/ and /r/.

Aileen is a New York State licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and a certified Teacher of Speech and Hearing. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Aileen has a bachelor’s degree in Special and Elementary Education from Providence College, a master’s degree in Communication Disorders from Southern Connecticut State University, and an Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from St. Rose College. Aileen’s career has expanded to over 20 years with various therapeutic settings including Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, NY, the New York City Department of Education, pre-school home-based services, Early Intervention home-based services, and private practice. She currently works as a Supervisor of Speech Improvement for the New York City Department of Education. In her current position, Aileen oversees the implementation of speech and language services for students across parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. She also supports her staff through clinical observations, mentoring, provision of professional learning opportunities, and supporting the implementation of literacy programs. Literacy programs are designed to target grades K – 2 by identifying struggling readers and providing them with evidence-based interventions that develop early literacy skills such as phonemic and phonological awareness. Interventions include Sounds in Motion, Sound Sensible, and SPIRE. The goal of the program is to identify struggling readers early and bring them to grade level as quickly as possible. Aileen has presented on a variety of topics including Vocabulary Intervention for Adolescents, Service Delivery Options, the Role of the SLP in Schools, and Evidence-Based Best Practices for Speech and Language Therapy.

Aileen works with children from birth through adolescents with specialties in the areas of feeding and swallowing disorders (picky eaters, behavior disorders), early and adolescent literacy, executive functioning, ADHD, articulation, phonological disorders, expressive and receptive language delays and disorders, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). She is trained in various treatment methodologies including the SOS Approach to Feeding (SOS), a treatment approach that considers all of the underlying factors of feeding such as sensory processing, behavior, cognition, nutrition, and environment. Sounds Sensible, SPIRE, and Sounds in Motion are evidence-based programs that target phonological and phonemic awareness in grades pre-K – 2nd grade. Basic Writing Skills target the organization and expansion of writing skills for students in elementary through high school.

Aileen’s approach to therapy is child-centered. Young children learn and grow best through guided exploration. When working with middle and high school students Aileen encourages these clients to take ownership of their therapy by communicating their challenges and helping them to set individual goals that they work to achieve together. Therapy includes academics and also individual interests to keep therapy motivating. Her goal is to have the child reach his or her highest potential with their speech, language, feeding, and literacy development. She partners with families so they are integrated into the therapy process.

In our new reality of COVID, remote learning and social distancing Aileen is prepared to provide teletherapy via online platforms including ZOOM, MS Teams, Google Meet, and FaceTime using a variety of practices and techniques for remote instruction. While the physical space may be different the principles that drive therapy remain the same regardless of location.

Jisu S. is a fluent bilingual (Korean, English) Speech-Language Pathologist who has been practicing for over 10 years.

She received a Master of Science in the speech-language field at Columbia University, a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and a Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) certificate and Bilingual Extension certificate from New York State.

Over the years, Jisu has been working in a variety of pediatric settings such as public/private schools and private practices. She has comprehensive experience with assessment and intervention for bilingual children with speech/language disorders including expressive/receptive language delays, apraxia of speech, fluency disorders, articulation, phonological disorders, pragmatic/social skills, and pre-literacy/literacy skills. She has widely worked with preschool-aged children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and have sensory and behavioral issues and social communication disorder, and with nonverbal children, implementing alternative augmentative communication (AAC) systems such as Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

Jisu has also worked in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) and home settings with geriatric populations suffering from strokes, brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and senile dementia. She has extensive experience with the evaluation and treatment of adult patients with aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, cognitive-linguistic deficits, voice disorders, and dysphagia. 

Her wealth of experience from continuously performing numerous assessments of bicultural/bilingual clients has enabled her to develop appropriate intervention plans to meet the specific needs of each client. Working with multicultural families on a regular basis has enabled her to be culturally competent and accurately observe the clients in the context of family and culture. Jisu strongly believes that cultural sensitivity is critical in the process of planning for and implementing evaluation and assessment. Cultural competence or the ability to build rapport with families from various cultural and socioeconomic groups is essential for an effective partnership supporting clients’ improvement.
